Partial stone Celt

I found this a six or seven years ago along with some other artifacts (points, pottery, shards, hammer stones).

I was a bit disappointed when I picked it up to see that it was broken, but it is the first and only one I ever found.

Does it look like a break from use or could it have been chisled at the break in order to insert in a haft?

I’ve had it stashed away with some other odds and ends but decided to pull it out and display it with some of the items found from the same location.

I think one artifact can look good but displayed with others sort of tells a “story”… regardless of the condition.

Thanks for looking…. any idea of what it’s made of? At first, I thought it might be slate.

I'd say that is a natural formation. No indication it was fashioned by man.

Sorry, I think it is natural, no signs of being worked, it appears to break easily and is also way too small.

My gut says plain old sandstone but I’ll keep repeating myself I’m no groundstone expert.

Thanks… I feel like I keep striking out on some of these pick ups… yep, I pick up just about everything I find! Especially since the area searched has very little natural rock…. sea shells and oyster shells are plentiful.

After posting that I thought it was a Celt I realized the front bit was not curved but straight.. and thought maybe a hoe.

That’s the first step, it’s just as good to learn what’s not an artifact as what is, your on the right track don’t get discouraged. I think we’ve all been where you are, I know I was

Keep picking up every interesting thing you see and try to identify it whether its a rock or not. Eventually you will become an expert at the things found in your area. Post the stuff too. many of us here love to try and identify what people find. Do it enough and your going to stumble upon something really cool I am sure of it. I believe the best part will in time become the friendships you form with people here as we all have the same kind of interests. I think researching rocks in a certain area (like me in my yard) is rewarding as well as you can work on finding out what happened at different periods in the millions of years of time that has passed. You will find endless mysteries to solve about how stuff gets to its spot and the journey is the reward. Best of Luck
