Hello everyone,
Found this most heartbreaking item, and hoping to get some information on it.
It is part of a copper alloy Medallion, rounded bottom, straight sides.
38 mm wide, depicting what appears to be a 16th century European soldier with sword and pike/flag? over a kneeling supplicant.
The depiction of course this doesn't mean the piece is of that era.
I have searched for a while through some pages, can find nothing similar, it's shape may help narrow search parameters, as most medals are round :tongue3:
I am hoping that the T-net sleuths will come through with something on this, maybe just a country from the uniform style.
rear is of piece is blank
Thanks for looking! ;D

Re: Partial Medallion 16th century Soldier

its a form of the virginia state seal * virtus (virginia) "defeating" tyranny (britian)-- the sword and spear toting roman figure virtus is making tyranny submit -- often the latin motto "sic semper tyrannis"--thus always to tryants --is used with the image (normally thou virtus is shown as having tyranny "underfoot")

in otherwords---we will always fight and defeat tyrants.

another possible is a dutch "conqest of the 'locals" type item--- with the locals having to submit to them -- dutch folks were in that area (new york was formerly known as "new amsterdam" long ago )

Re: Partial Medallion 16th century Soldier

Thanks Creskol and Ivan,
I am noticing now that the vanquished appears to be wearing similar garb to the Victor.
Agree with the similarity to early Dutch Soldier, rather close to the image on their 16th century Ducat.
If memory serves, most European dress of the period was similar.
What were those poofy shorts called :icon_scratch:
The general theme is a common one, as in this Spanish War Medal.

Reminds me of Colombus enslaving the natives.

Agreed, Or another European of the age of exploration/conquest.
A very ugly time for western 'Civilization'
Love that picture
what makes this find so disappointing is its great condition other than being broken.
I guess that may sound oxymoronic :tongue3:

The vanquished may be a child or woman.

When Columbus and his crew arrived on their second visit to Hispaniola, however, they took captive about two thousand local villagers who had come out to greet them . .

[Diarist] Cuneo further notes that he himself took a beau-tiful teenage Carib girl as his personal slave, a gift from Columbus himself, but that when he attempted to have sex with her, she “resisted with all her strength.” So, in his own words, he “thrashed her mercilessly and raped her” . . .

Columbus and his men also used the Taino as sex slaves: it was a common reward for Columbus’ men for him to present them with local women to rape. As he began exporting Taino as slaves to other parts of the world, the sex-slave trade became an important part of the business, as Columbus wrote to a friend in 1500: “A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand” . .

Eventually, life for the Taino became so unbearable that, as Pedro de Cordoba wrote to King Ferdinand in a 1517 letter, “As a result of the sufferings and hard labor they endured, the Indians choose and have chosen suicide. Occasionally a hundred have committed mass suicide. The women, exhausted by labor, have shunned conception and childbirth… Many, when pregnant, have taken something to abort and have aborted. Others after delivery have killed their children with their own hands, so as not to leave them in such oppressive slavery.”

Re: Partial Medallion 16th century Soldier

Great story, it is similarly related in the book below.
Much of what we are taught in school is not what actually happened.
'The peoples history of the United States' by Howard Zinn is a good starting point for anyone interested in an 'alternate view'
I had my Cob encapsulated mainly because I did not want to touch it anymore knowing the suffering inflicted to obtain that metal.
Some bad JuJu there.

History is written by the victors.

:icon_thumright: I would say its not a token or coin but a medal, medallion like you say or fob. It looks quite large if you complete the circle. Not so large if it has 2 flat sides like you said.

Re: Partial Medallion 16th century Soldier

I believe it is a medallion.
In the OP photos, (and description) left side intact with straight raised edge.
Bottom is rounded, straight sides, top unknown.
Shape would be an aid in attempting a match.

I agree it's Columbus :icon_thumright:

Check out the design similarity in this 1892 Columbian Exposition medallion:

Thanks Ironspike!
Good to hear from you again :hello:
I started thinking Columbian Exposition Item last night, they made literally thousands of medallions for the event.
I have an aluminum 'Chicago Day' token that appears to be rather scarce, can't find a match on that either. ( Thank You Dave!)
I found a good site with a lot of examples. (too many to browse and no search option)
Can't find it today ??? Here's a page of medallion links, again, too many to browse:

HH to all
