I wasn't going to post this but I'm hoping it is easy for someone so I can stop thinking about what it might be. I think it is brass with an iron piece attached and corroding through. Found in a yard outside an outbuilding and house.

Actually, first thought is wall mounted base-plate for a door stop, but I haven't managed to find a match.
It is one of those things that metaphorically rings a bell, that's for sure.

Kia ora Mate, to be honest, both those thoughts of yours were my 'very first thoughts' :tongue3: ;D , but I discounted the heel plate because of the 'iron' protusion.
And I guess the size of a US quarter.

Thanks NZers! Hey there Mike ;D The heel plate idea popped into my head earlier today too. It is about 1 3/4" long and 1 1/4" wide. More fitting for a child perhaps...
