I don't think it is for a cassette player, but I guess it could be a magnetic pickup and counter ballance, it also brings to mind an old thermostat control for a residential home.

Can you clean it up some?

Ahhhh...I can see now how those 2 circular things could be the old coils

Hey Wheatsweep!! It actually looks to be the internal working part of the cassette itself!! The four holes mount to the plastic side of the cassette!! GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Honestly to me it looks like part of an old reel to reel tape player, part of the head and discs for the tape to run past.

I think old tape players would have the metal frame parts plated. To me it looks like something that would predate tape players or things like that and was in the ground for better then 60 years. Clean it up and look for any identifying marks. I've no clue what that dealeo is
