Looks like it could be the lock from an old trunk. I have one something like that without the added swirly part. I'll try and find it and post a picture if nobody else does before I do. Might take until this evening though.

yeah trunk came to our mids as well, but nothing else really hit in that area, used to be old farms in that area of georgia they live so......thanks all for info, was just curious about the numbers inside and R probably stands for right side or something....been long time since i have seen a skeleton key lock like this....gregg

Darkness came before I could find my lock, (I'll have to wait until its light and I can get to the shed). But while I'm here, I'd revise my guess by saying that yours is likely for a cabinet door, or a desk drawer.

Finding a key that fits usually isn't too hard, but most people who have one don't like to sell them cheap. I've got one key for one of my locks, but I need another for a second lock of the same type. No rush though. I've had both locks for a few years and most everything I "could" have used them on, ended up with a padlock.

girlfriends brother also stated that the two clasps on top were for a cover which sl;ide in there to cover the hole to keep rain out, etc, so im swaying towards a door more than a cabinet..its fairly too big for a cabinet and its just one side of the lock ...but thanks...gregg

Sometimes those "ornate" covers, were intended to be mostly esthetic purposes, sometimes not.

I haven't been able to locate mine yet, but I found a picture of one very similar to it:

The website page I found this on has many other locks and you can even get key blanks, striker plates and sets of skeleton keys here:
