Hello everyone.

I found this near the site of an English Civil War site and am struggling to identify it. I know virtually nothing about firearms. The site yielded several musket balls and other bits and pieces and I think this may be part of a musket firing mechanism, perhaps a cap to cover the powder in the breech. I would be obliged for any opinions. It is made from brass.Regards

Your item looks like a clock pendulum. Is it heavy?

It's not part of any musket or rifle, not even a decoration. If it's not a clock pendulum, perhaps it has something to do with artillery. To my eye it looks like a cannon barrel behind a large ball, so perhaps like crossed cannons, it denotes something to do with artillery.

Thanks for your replies,
I don't think it's part of a clock pendulum. It's broken off at the pointed end and I have the impression that the missing part is some sort of hinge. I never noticed that it looked like an image of a cannon but now that Bosnmate mentions it, it does. I now think it could be a part of a helmet badge. I'm looking forward to any views.

it looks like it was attached to cloth or leather and there is some of it still attached to the back, it also looks like 2 either rivet ore attachment holes of some type.

The back part is very thin brass and was riveted to the orb.

Its part of an 17-18th C sword belt fittment.

I think you have nailed it Crusader. I think it's worth declaring in that case. I'll get it recorded in the database.
Thanks again for your help.

No worries, I've had a few over the years. I GPS every one but the PAS don't have enough time to do all our finds.
