Hello everyone!

I had just gotten my very first detector earlier this spring and found two things of note right away in my own front yard here in Minnesota, which I have come to learn an old dirt road used to run right by, going back to at least 1912.

One thing was a 35% silver Nickel from 1946, and the following Broach? which may only be from the 1960's and possibly French but I'd be interested to know more about it if anyone knows for sure, Thank you.

Welcome to Tnet. I don’t think the arms are for anything particular. From a heraldic point of view, the juxtapositions are all wrong and it seems to be a fantasy piece with the charges cobbled together for show. Lots of these exist as lapel badges and pins, as emblems on tie clips and such. Here are some variations on the theme of yours, including an apparently identical one.

Someone, somewhere must have originally put these particular heraldic devices together in that way, but as ornamentation inspired by heraldry and using borrowed imagery. I wouldn’t rule out that a club or society has this as a pretentious emblem, but I think more likely it was originated from a maker of fashion jewellery and has been subsequently imitated by other makers.

Welcome to TNet. Looks like you're off to a good start. Please dbl-check the date on the nickel, as I think 35% silver nickels were minted from 1942-45.

Excellent, Thank you for taking the time to reply and even providing photos, I appreciate it.

What you say makes a lot of sense and it looks like I came to the right place to ask my question!

The funny thing is I was studying family crests and heraldry pretty deeply about two weeks before finding this so It sure made it all the more fun!

Ah, Yes - I had not looked at it since I found it but upon further inspection ( and my new jewelers loop ) I have found it to be a 1946 Jefferson though it looks like it's held up quite well in the ground.

Thank you for the information and welcome!
