Found this oval brass item today. It was 10 inches down, so it has me interested as to what it may be. The only thing I could find that looked similar in shape was a sword buckle from the Civil War. Maybe this piece broke off from a sword buckle? I also saw a buckle suspender bar that looked a little bit like it as well.

It measures about 3 3/4" in length and is roughly 1/16" thick. It appears to have some gold gilt on it. Any help ID'ing what it is would be appreciated.

First two pics are the item and the last is the Civil War sword buckle:

I am gonna go out on a limb and guess a woman barrette for their hair, maybe missing its clip?It looks old whatever it is

That's a very good guess! I'll do a Google image search and see if I can find a similar one. Thanks!

Your welcome. It reminded of this one I found.Different, but looks to have the same idea. What you have looks much older, larger and seems to be constructed from cast brass, opposed to mine looks to be made of sheet copper.I am guessing that, or maybe some kind of sling guide? Can you see any places where a hook or anything might have been attached? 001.JPG002.JPG
