I was detecting around an old pioneer site last weekend and I found a few old iron relics. I found a lot of square nails, a spike, a 1/2" square piece of copper, a blob of lead, and a 4-1/2" chunk of iron with the swirl design. I'm not sure what the chunk of iron is from, Im guessing that it is a part that broke off an old wood stove. The iron is just over 1/8" thick and I can see that it is snapped off something. Any ideas about the chunk of iron or the copper square? The copper is about 0.020" thick.

I didn't find anything too exciting but I'm going back there in the coming weeks to see what else there is to be found.

James, that is part of an old wood stove or range all right. I find parts and pieces all the time. They must have had great fun busting them up with a hammer! Some years ago I restored about 20-25 surviving wood heating stoves and ranges.Sold them for $500-$1500 each. But it wouldn't be practical to weld those busted up stoves back together. Todays trash is tomorrows antiques!

That spike looks like a mini railroad spike. It could have been part of a small rail system for loading/unloading etc. Riverboats were common in this area in the 1800s and I think that it might have been part of something for loading and offloading cargo. That would be my guess about the spike. That area is certainly worth another look!
