Been a while since I had something worth posting.......This past week I got in touch with the manager of the local reservoirs (had a question regarding a possible siteI wanted to check out) and was really surprised how quickly he returned my call! Super nice guy, I told him I was looking to metal detect if it was possible. The area in question is no longer in the hands of the city so it was a no-go on that site. He did however, tell me about another place I might want to check out that was under his management. He also went on to tell me how they (the city) had acquired another 15 acres of land that nobody has used or been on since 1855 or so. (thanks again Mr. Rosenthal!) My plan was to make a beeline for this area but got waylaid along the way with the volume of CRAP that I kept coming across! Ended up detecting the trails and across and earthen dam for the better part of 4 hours.

I wasn't able to access the new area of 15 acres as the dam is washed out in one section and it's too deep/wide to jump across (trust me, I considered it but then thought of taking a dip with my detector, cell phone and pinpointer and decided against it) so I'll have to try and go on another day when it's cool like today and hit that other section. Over all it was pretty much a trash collection. You have to kind of expect it when you are sticking to the trails. People too lazy to carry out their pull tabs, bottle caps and cans, are also to lazy to throw them far into the woods so they all collect along the trail. . Overgrowth was a bit thick and I wasn't braving the sticker bushes without long pants! Maybe in the fall.....anyway......here are my finds. A few bullet casings, Peterson shotgun shell, mason jar top (stopped my heart for a sec...was at the base of a large tree...top up, with glass still attached, then I dug it out and saw it was just the top. Dug more but nothing else in the hole....) a church pin and a cool old button I need help with. I took a little soap and water to it and toothpicked it a bit but don't wanna do any more until I know if it's worth it or not. Can anyone ID the button? Thanks again for looking!

I also came across 2 benchmarks buried along the way......Mr Rosenthal, If anyone needs to find them again....I can lead them right to em!

It was also my first day out with my new Predator Tools Piranha 35! It did a GREAT job slicing through all the roots (and there are ALOT of them) and the sharpened edge that gravediggermax put on there for me made it even better! Thanks Max!

The button looks like a Connecticut state button...

Looks like you are right! I just looked up some other examples and there are a few from that state! The back is hard to read.....it has raised letters. Think its ok to soak it in some olive oil? The gold gilding is gone..only saw two little flecks left on the button.

Yah go ahead with the olive oil or lemon juice... Looks to me it is Civil War period... Really neat dig.. I sure remember my first one. Looks like you got a nice little dig spot...

Thanks LawrenceMN! I just found the same site! Looks like it's the only one with raised letters....gonna keep it in the olive oil for a bit and then will add the updated photos here when it's done. Guess all that trash was worth it!

Makes ya wonder what the soldier was doing there when he dropped it. 1850's........pre war button. Was the soldier wearing it a career soldier who had already been in for a while before the war started and then dropped it later during/after the war.......or dropped pre-war by a soldier from the north who had been stationed in Hampton Roads. Guess Mr. Rosenthal's comment about the one area not having anyone using it since 1855 is right on the money! (although this find wasn't IN THAT area but on one of the roads/trails to it.)

If I were you I wouldnt soak it in olive oil....its a three piece which means the middle is "hollow, and that oil will get in there and leak out over time....makes a huge mess!!

Oops...too late...in there now but yeah, you are right....I'll have to drain it real well after it's done........and keep an eye on it after.

It will be okay if you drain all the olive oil out of it.. Sorry I mis-read the part "soaking" i thought you were gonna "brush" it off and not soak it. anyway i clean my buttons with ammonia soap or lemon juice... Olive oil is good for cleaning coins and i do know people use olive oil to lightly brush buttons with but not soak it.. Good luck in the future. Better head out...

Thanks for all of the help IDing the button you guys! It's looking better already from being in the oil. I'll give it a bit more light toothpicking today sometime after my son's football scrimmage. Can't wait to get back there and check some some more but the one area I still want to get to can't be easily accessed from the land side (new development on one side and it's all new houses and a LARGE fence that blocks that area. I'll have to try to cross the breach in the dam somehow or start knocking on doors and ask for permission to cross through someone's yard who hopefully has a gate in the fence!
