I stopped by a park last Thursday after checking out the other "promising" parks in the town. The other parks weren't turning up anything so figured I should at least try this one before I scratch another town off my dwindling list of reasonably near locales. Glad I did. I managed to pull out a wheat penny between all the pull tabs. Well, I went back yesterday and today. Yesterday I found two wheats, a junk ring, and two sweet silver dimes. Today I found two junk rings, a merc, and my super sweet sterling whatsit. Any info on the bucklethingy would be appreciated :)

nice finds

Awesome! You always find the best stuff in the places you least expect it seems.

Cool finds! :occasion18::blob9::occasion18: Someone here will probably I.D. the silver item, especially if you also post the tiny words on it - hard to read as is. Good Luck! :cat: Andi

Hello sideshowbob, the silver item is indeed a belt buckle dating early 1900's. I would say Circa 1920's or earlier, is marked sterling, was made in the USA, and manufactured by the Elgin AM Mfg. Co, who started in business in 1887. you'll find a lot of there stuff on ebay.

Here in Texas, I have found a few even dated. Those are always a good find congrats.

Here's a few pic of mine.

I was thinking buckle too but the belt loops look to be on the wrong side. Also it has a hole on each side opposite the loops for a possible pivot point. Maybe this is part of a two piece buckle. It's all speculation. Hopefully I'll get some time later and look a little harder on the web for a match

There is a bar that goes across the two circular holes, that holds the belt stationary. There is another bar that sits in the two long holes, and slides up and down them. When the web belt is run through it, the bar is pulled to one side, pinching the belt between it and the front of the buckle, thereby holding it in via friction.

Oh thank you! Now I get it.

Does this buckle have a certain name? I'd like to find a picture of an undug example.

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures
