Panning mentor needed

Daddyologist,

While you are waiting for a mentor, check out all the panning videos on YouTube. That's how I learned to pan. Classify your material to 1/8 inch and pan down the rest.

Good Luck,
David

You don't need a mentor, you just need a lot of practice.

1 - classify! classify! classify! You need everything to be the same size to be most effective
2 - MOVE THAT PAN! You must have everything in motion to give the gold the opportunity to settle to the bottom.
3 - Don't over fill the pan. Start with small amounts, no more than about 1 cup of material
4 - shake and wash, shake and wash. Every time you wash the light stuff off the top, go back and re-agitate. Repeat as necessary.
5 - keep going until you have about a shot-glass of material left, then start swirling (gently) the water in the pan to slowly wash the sand away. Watch the leading edge for bits of gold to start appearing. Be careful because you can see a flake in one swirl and it will wash away the next if you aren't careful.

Watch the show "gold fever" with Tom massie, he explains how to pan and sample at least 5-6 times per episode and I feel like I've learned a lot from watching his show. It's like the PBS version of mining ;) lol

Here is how it is done By Virgil Hutton, a master.
Provided by Garrett detectors.

This is exactly how I taught my son.

Get your self a Garrett pan. I have a 7 and 14 inch. 7 is easier to carry when hiking.
Get some dirt or sand and run it around you pan to ruffen it up.After you wash it out with soap and water.
Then find or borrow 5----- #7 pure lead bird shot from a shotgun shell.
Now add 3 handfuls of dirt, gravel, sand, what ever to your pan.
Now put the 5 pieces of lead shot, on the top0 of your dirt.
Now pan the material. When you have nothing hardly in your pan,you should have the 5 pieces of bird shot in the first or second riffle from the bottom of the pan.
If you can do this, you are the expert and belong teaching other people.

The problem with that "old school" instruction is that anyone can pan birdshot. I could pan birdshot in 13 seconds (because that was my time in the competition) and I'm no expert. Panning to keep flakes and dust requires a lot more care and time.
