panning in gravel bar

Until you can't dig further.

You want to hit bedrock. You want the dirt right on top of bedrock and the dirt in the cracks/holes in bedrock.

Also, if you have bedrock that has shale like cracks in it, bust that up and pan it too.
You would be shocked at how gold can wedge itself deep down in those tiny cracks.

As they say, "gold is where you find it".
I've dug into a gravel bar and find gold close to the suface then found nothing or very little at bedrock.
Just dig : )

Hi Concord,
I would start at the up stream part of the gravel bar. That is where the bar first started to form and started to collect the gold. Dig as deep as you can to get to bedrock. If you are lucky it won't be too deep to bedrock. To deal with the water either buy or make a hand pump made of pvc pipe. You can find plans on line. This way you can work bedrock and around boulders and not have to deal with the water washing the material off of your shovel. If you have or access to a dredge even better.

Good Luck!
