A few years ago, before I bought my detector, a few buddies and I went to a local stream to pan.
We had read a few articals talking about how placer gold was found in just about all water ways in Michigan. So we decided to make a day of it.
We didnt have actual pans they were improvised but still worked well I think. We did indeed find trace amounts of gold! Cool! But the coolest part is that I found what I thought to be a rough diamond. It was squared and semi see through... I handed it to one of my buddies and said what I thought it was and that I wanted to have it looked at... He looked at it then threw it a my other buddy They said no way that it was a diamond... I didnt think it was all that far fetched seeing that Michigan was carved out by Glacial drift... Im no expert but I do know enough to know that glaciers pick up cool stuff as they carve and tear through the ground and then melt/recede. Not mention that Kimberlite diamonds are found as close as Canada. So my theory is that these Kimberlite pipes where there as the glaciers tore through them, then melted depositing them in to waterways.
So I guess my point is here has anyone found raw diamonds while panning in Michigan? does My theory have logic? and would re hunting the area be just a crap shoot?
