A few years ago, before I bought my detector, a few buddies and I went to a local stream to pan.
We had read a few articals talking about how placer gold was found in just about all water ways in Michigan. So we decided to make a day of it.

We didnt have actual pans they were improvised but still worked well I think. We did indeed find trace amounts of gold! Cool! But the coolest part is that I found what I thought to be a rough diamond. It was squared and semi see through... I handed it to one of my buddies and said what I thought it was and that I wanted to have it looked at... He looked at it then threw it a my other buddy :BangHead: They said no way that it was a diamond... I didnt think it was all that far fetched seeing that Michigan was carved out by Glacial drift... Im no expert but I do know enough to know that glaciers pick up cool stuff as they carve and tear through the ground and then melt/recede. Not mention that Kimberlite diamonds are found as close as Canada. So my theory is that these Kimberlite pipes where there as the glaciers tore through them, then melted depositing them in to waterways.
So I guess my point is here has anyone found raw diamonds while panning in Michigan? does My theory have logic? and would re hunting the area be just a crap shoot?

One of my prospecting friends has found one or two in the gravel pit we prospect in Michigan. I always screen my cons and look at the plus 20's under magnification just to check but have not found any. There are some around but based on the amount of material we move per year I would say they are pretty rare.

Ok thanks for the info. I knew they where here... Im still convinced that the Diamond was the real deal.... I remember as a kid I was a major rock hound. I had a book with all the minerals in it with a check list next to the entries to mark which ones Ive found... Among other minerals, diamond was one Ive never found but looked for constantly. And what I found at the stream took me right back to the pic and description in that book.
I think that precious stones are over looked a lot in panning. True Im not very experienced in panning but I am experienced with rocks and minerals. Im convinced of diamonds in that stream. I would really like to find some nice ones and rub it in there faces lol

Are you saying you didn't retrieve the rock? How could you let that happen?😳

I don't spend a lot of time examining rocks I do allow for collection of a few leverite samples.

Easier said than done lol When my bud threw it at my other bud it was a distance of about 3-4ft I heard it hit the water but didnt actually see it hit... Plus it was roughly the size of a peanut M&M so to search for it in a river bed seemed like a needle in a hay stack type situation... My friends can be immature a lot of the time and I take activities such as these seriously. So I dont take them panning or detecting anymore. Plus my buddy that had the stone thrown at him, used to come detecting with me but he constantly would get on my case about digging targets. He would say "Its just garbage. Leave it" That got annoying really fast aswell. So I just go solo now days... Plus if I hit a nice score I dont have to share it with people who obviously dont take the hobby as seriously as I do lol

No, these are to long and completely see through. What I found was more squared, semi see through and smooth on all edges... Ive looked on a few sites the have to deal with raw/rough diamonds and the pics Ive seen through research look very much the same. But, a lot of these sites also say to have it examined by a pro... So thats why I asked if anyone else has found any before to kinda back up my gut feeling.
