I like that read. While I'm sure those scrapers taken from context that would lead one to belive they are very old may well be paleo. I have examples that mirror them from positively non paleo sites from the archaic period.

Hey Gator, a portion of your reply is exactly why I wanted to share this information. If you look at the bottom of that link you'll see the "ratio" link. It's easy to declare a site non-paleo when the ratio of PES to projectile points could be 17:1. I've found a few scrapers that meet the PES description but they've always been closely associated with Archiac tools.....which gets me wondering.....

1. Perhaps there's not much erosion depth between the Paleo and Archaic where I search....these layers could honestly be separated by an inch or two....

2. Maybe the PES morpology carried over into the transitional Archaic for a few hundred years?

3. Perhaps the Kirk and Pinetree technology is a little (or alot) older than we currently believe?

I see your line of thought now..very intuitive ...

That's a good site with lots of info. I wish he went into other paleo type scrapers, non spurred examples. Or even archaic types. I agree, there is little difference between some of the paleo and early archaic scrapers. Same goes with alot of the uniface knives and tools of those time periods.

I found a small spurred endscraper on a Miss. site at the same level with triangles and shell beads.

Ditto on the small scrapers with spurs. However, the author insists that the size of the PES be in the neighborhood of a silver dollar to rule in it. Other than size, there is so very little difference between them. That might explain why he hasn't addressed the non spurred examples.

I'm away from home at the moment but I have a couple recent photos on my phone of a piece from an archaic site where it would be big news if anything paleo came from there. It's not the best example but it's got a good spur. And is Uni facial. The other two are just interesting and from the same early to middle archaic site. ( The first and last photo are the same piece)

Most of the spots I find artifacts in I have found items from all periods and yes even Paleo. If it was a good spot near water everyone wanted to live there.
