Re: Padlock

Thanks bigcy...Expensive lock for the times. Mine is actually the bottom one at $0.12 ea. Not sure what is in the diamond. Looks like a G on top and a B ? Co on bottom. What would be the best way to clean it?

Pretty sure it's bronze. It has a beautiful green patina. Or maybe some sorta alloy?

done dug it all up said:
Dry brushing with a soft toothbrush. No water. And if it looks like the patina is coming off, stop cleaning.
Thanks done dug it all up...I will try this. When I get it clean I will post a cleaned pic. I think this one is going to clean up very nice.

Re: Padlock

Nice lock. Very good the way it looks now even...if it comes out with the nice patina that's showing in the few areas, alll over... it'll be very nice!
Yes, do be careful when cleaning it, cause as I said, it looks darn good as it is

Hmmm, cost 12 cents new! Cheaper by the dozen! Monty

Finished the cleaning and thought I would show the pics. I think it turned out great. Tried the soft brush but the grime was just caked on to hard. Ended up using Buckle Boys preferred method, "toothpic".

I did a Google patent search on the dates but came up without a match. ...maybe one of the other patent databases has it. Looks great.

I haven't found the exact lock or the patents but I found this. Slaymaker Barry Lock Co. Once the largest lock manufacturer in the world.
Thanks for looking.

Great work that should narrow it down. The Slaymaker Barry Co. or Slaymaker Barry & Co. Someone else found one. http://www.dfxonly.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24888&sid=e3ab07b965344f8f111932315a644f6e

scroll down to bottom, it says:

I got an answer about the padlock on another site as follows:

An identical warded padlock is illustrated in the 1895 Montgomery Ward & Co. catalog. At that time it retailed for 12¢, or $1.25/doz. A lock of the same design, but with a maker-marked shackle, is listed in Arnall's book, The Padlock Collector. Attributed to the Slaymaker-Barry Co. (c. 1888-1900), it is valued at $15 in Very Good condition.

Yours should be one of the first with the patent date.

Well bigcy...I think that winds this one up. Thanks for all the help. I'll mark it solved.

Antiques with patent dates are usually worth more than the same item without.

If the body of the lock is 2 1/8" It was made by S.B. & Co. which is Slaymaker-Barry Should be worth around $15 in fair condition. Yours looks better than fair to me.

Something I've been trying on my locks is called Kramers Best Antique improver. Puts a nice finish on them and has a little cleaning action. This stuff is also excellent on wood items also. Oh, yeah, it doesn't smell too bad & so far doesn't seem to attract dust as bad as other oils etc.
