Reminds me of 2 Things.

A oil Lamp top that would have a Wick Through.
If Not for the Hinge.

Or a Bank top. though not quite the right shape.

I Don't ever remember seeing a Hinge on a lamp top

That's a great guess I doubt it is a Railroad related piece

I could easily see it as railroad related lantern. This is not an exact match, but is similar in design. light.jpg

Jeff and Simon nailed it with oil lamp burner top... it may very well have gone to a railroad lantern. :thumbsup:
All of the early rail coaches were also outfitted with wall mounted oil lamps for lighting like this one... so you never know.

yup i have found a couple of these lamp heads intact that have hinges on them.
