It's a lead seal of the type used on railroad boxcars. Note the letters "R R" on the opposite side. If you can read all of the letters (I can't quite make them out in the photo), they are the initials or "reporting mark" used by the railroad.

Found a report on an archeological dig in Tennesee that turned up one of your box car seals. P.S. Justice surrounding a star. The funny thing is the first assumption is correct as P.S. Justice did manufactur Muskets, Sabres in civil war era. And the box car seal is obviously correct. I wonder if the contents were transported to P.S. Justice in Philadelphia, or could it be finished product transported to the front lines... Really cool stuff... !

From other research including this document I think it probably is "L. & N. R. R." (Louisville & Nashville Railroad).

Do a search in this document for "lead seal" and "P.S. Justice"

very interesting stuff.

I found this at my mothers house, as I know of, the rail road never ran through that area. Her house was built in the 40's, and the land was farm before that. As far as my mother can tell, no one in our family,(the only ones who have ever owned the home) have ever worked for the railroad. However, I have found other railroad items, such as Spikes and the likein the yard. I'll have to do more research and dig there again. Puzzeling to me!!!

Again, if you can read most or all of letters on the "R R" side, one of us can probably identify the railroad, especially if you'll also post your general location.

P. S. Justice Co. was active at least as early as 1861, and as late as 1887. In addition to muskets and sabers, they also manufactured various items for railroads: car springs, wheels, etc. So, their mark on the seal may simply indicate that they supplied the seal blank &/or the hand-seal used to crimp and emboss it.

I know this is an old thread but for what it's worth, I dug one of these a week ago in the Houston area. P.S. Justice one side and H. Houston RR on the other. Dug at 6-8 inches at the same depth as some Enfield bullets and a .54 cal three ringer. I think H. Houston RR was the Harrisburg-Houston RR. And that they took shipment of muskets, or muskets parts to a muster point. That's where we have been hunting. Has any one found any more info?

the P. S. Justice seal might be for a box or crate of items being moved on the Rialroad line to prevent anyone tampering with the cargo from point A to point B ==the box or crate might have been goods from P.S. Justice --or it might have been just the seal used for other items --items that might not have been opened until it was delivered to the farm or place where it was going to finally..
