Hello button gurus. I could use some help dating a button that I dug today. It's a first for me and I'm thrilled to have it. However, I'd love to be able to date it. I know these were made from the 1890's-1970's. Can anyone help me out here. The back is pretty crunchy!

Albert's lists it as the first P.O.D. button so I am going with the early time frame for it.

Oh sweet! Were you able to get that from the few markings on the back? I have to get a button book.

Hi; If you Post a clearer picture of the back lettering or just write it out in your Post We can tell you almost exatly when it was made and it's value and how it was made ok. We await. PEACE:RONB

Hi BARKER. The back is super crusty. This is what my magnifier could do. Probably not much help I know. I can really only see 3 defined characters.

There is only one maker listed for the POD buttons in Albert's book. The three letters I see look like "GAU..." if so that would be J.R. Gaunt and he is the one. According to the book "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates" by William F. McGuinn an Bruce S. Bazelon, all American buttons date 1900 and later. Gaunt, in one form or another dates from 1888 to 1968.

Man, that is a long date range. I hope is an earlier one but I guess we will never know. Thank you all so much for your information and research!

There were changes in the front of the button over the years. Your button is the first design so I would feel confident to say it is around the 1900 end of the date range.
