My buddy just called me and said he found a gold plated P button today. I looked through the books I have and online and could find no P button. He found it at a large CW site here in alabama but it could also be civilian. The back reads (he thinks) ....evans....mass... He has limited research resources and I havnt seen the button myself yet. He said the P is fancy and he is not even sure its a P. Any ideas? thanks.

Describe the P button to him from my photo, like the others have said, odds on it is P for Police.

He discribed it to look exactly like the large P button at the right of the above three pictures. Any ideas on age, history and value? Thank you for helping.

Doubt they have much value, rather common I believe, as far as age, hard to say, not sure what the backmark is on my but the Evans buttons can be anywhere from 1860s to 1945 or so, I believe most like mine are probably late 1800s, but not sure, my button is put away for now and cannot look at the backmark for dating.

Like everyone has already said it sound like a generic police button. you would have to go to the backmark for the age. D Evan's can date from 1848 into the mid 1900's. Some of the P buttons are civil war but most are later. If it is civil war it's worth $5 or so later buttons would be worth a lot less.
