I’ve been detecting a site that was a colonial homestead, and I found these oxen shoes. I’ve found many horse shoes over the years but never oxen shoes. Thanks for looking!
Oxen were like the bull dozers / tractor trailers of the olde days because the were strong, hearty and could deal with the east coast climate better than other animals. In the few years I've been detecting I've probably found 70 of these in various spots. It's always a sign of older farm activity. I've only found a handful of horseshoes which I would think I'd find more.
Old Ox shoes like that can sound really good and are indicative of the fact that you are on an old site as others have stated. Keep working that site, there’s more good finds there!
