Oversized wrought iron D ring

I found this yesterday at the ste of an 18th century plantation home. At first I thought buckle but there are no visible signs of buckle hardware being attached. Is this some type of horse tack?

I would believe it came from a saddle.

This is a modern western saddle, but it gives you an idea of one of the places that a D ring is used. There are others, in various sizes, on harness etc.
