Hello everyone,

Sometime ago I saw a post with something I found of the same thing. It has a Oval and an X in the Center. It has some writing around the Oval I can't make out. If anyone can tell me what the heck this thing is please do. Also if you have or can find a picture of one front and back of what it should like like. I would be very thankful. I forgot to put something in for size it is a little bigger than a quarter.

Thanks and HH!!

Doubt if cleaning it would change the appearance much? You might put a little olive oil on it an let it set for several days and then use a q-tip to clean it. Monty

Just a soak in warmed hydrogen peroxide will do wonders for that!

If you have the time and don't want to rush it just soak it in distilled water and give it a gentle brush with an old toothbrush twice a week. As the distilled water is a neutral liquid any impurities on the coin leech into the distilled water. This method won't do any damage, won't change the colour of the coin and won't cause pitting like some of the other methods.

The coin was issued by the Bank of Montreal in 1837. The denomination is One Sou (Un Sou) or half-penny. The French legend PROVINCE DU BAS CANADA is, in English, "Province of Lower Canada". "CONCORDIA SALUS" is Latin, roughly "together in safety" probably infers that the bank was a safe place to put your money. The man standing on the obverse was thought to be Louis Joseph Papineau, a famous French Quebec patriot, and these one sou coins soon became to be known as "Papineaus".
