Found this item while detecting a CW site this past weekend. Found multiple pieces of lead that day. Not saying this item is from the Civil War but just giving a time frame. It appears to be made of copper and is about the size of a silver dollar. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and happy hunting.

maybe the oval part is a receptor for the type of latch that goes through and spins to hold things closed?

RR,
I've found quite a few of those over the years at my CW relic sites too but don't know what they were used for. As suggested, maybe the receptacle part of a bag closer? Grommet?
I would love to have a positive ID too. I've thrown a lot of them away over the years thinking they were a modern type grommet, but now I wish I had kept them.

It's this type of fastener where it slides in the hole and then is twisted to lock. I think yours is probably military.

Texastee2007 is correct. Eddie Lomax is also correct, it is probably military. The military ones were made of plain (not plated) brass. Riverrat3, it looks like what was on my Korean War era knapsack, which I used as a book-carrier back in highschool (1960s).

I seem to see some canvas-like fabric still preserved between the from and back of your specimen.

Many of these that are found are actually curtain fasteners for buggies, surreys, wagons, etc, as shown in the attached photograph.

Yeah, didn't they put those on Ammo pouches/Cartridge boxes :icon_scratch: or maybe I'm thinking about saddlebags?

I also have one of those, I found at a CW battle site, where I found lots of CW bullets. Mine has a design on it and it's copper. I don't have the front part that latches, only the back oval part.
