Today Ironhorse and I were digging with our "Uncle Bill" from WI. We all met over 10 years ago when Bill emailed me saying he loved Detecting, had a family connection to our area, and said he would like to meet up. I said of course and the rest is digging history.

This trip however got off to an extremely slow start, and was just made worse by the bad weather, and we all had next to nothing to show for a few short hunts other than some bullets. (Bill wasn't with us yesterday) Having said that, Bill is a long time gun collector and shooter, so even though we didn't think the finds were anything to brag about, he was pleased. Even so, we wanted to do better and today was actually an added day to his trip because he wanted one more chance to get out with the forecast calling for clear sky and warm temps.. By this point however IH and I were feeling the pressure to find a site with some targets, and just about anything would do at this point. Our first two ideas didn't work out and we decided to roll the dice and head East to try what was the absolute last idea we had to get Bill some finds.

Once we arrived to the site we knew it wasn't real old, but was large, and we started digging targets. So ok, we accomplished the first objective which was to find the site, and now if he can just get his coil over a keeper! Everyone was finding some odds and ends, and I guess it was maybe 45 minutes into the hunt and I see Bill on his knees, inspecting something, and IH making his way over. I expected maybe he had found a rotted copper or flat button, but to my amazement he was holding a Flintlock pistol barrel! I think he was happy as a kid who had just been given a new bike. :laughing7: Unreal what a hard time we had getting on a site, and when we finally find one, Bill digs the best find and it's a gun... his passion! As IH and I walked away I looked at the sky and said "Thank you Detecting God"... and IH did the same.

I dug a few coppers and an American Large cent which I might add a picture of down the page, but today's mission was sending Uncle Bill home with a find he could remember. Mission accomplished! :headbang:

That will have to be a question I ask Bill and get back to you or maybe someone else could answer that. I'm not a gun guy at all.

Don't you wonder what happened to the poor guy that was shooting that gun It's things like this that make love this hobby. :blob1: :blob1: :blob1: :blob1:

ole Uncle Bill sure got the trophy for the best hunt find this week, just to have him digging away was enough but to see him dig a piece that is his passion, that's a memory maker!

I found one like it here in NY, does it have any stamps on it? Mine is marked ELG which is a Belgium gun.

Very cool that uncle Bill got something relating to both his passsions.

I like US large cents, none thus far though. Coincidentaly The first indian I found was first year of issue, the 2 cent i found was first year of issue, and the 3 cent silver was first year of issue, I hope when I finally find a large cent it is....hey, well sonner or later I got to make a good find.

Very nice find, it looks like a 1830's Belgium liege barrel.

over charging is possible of the rupture or "short starting" which means the ball wasn't properly seated and causes a airgap between the round and charge. When the spark ignites the powder it can explode in this loose area instead of firing the ball, causing the barrel to rupture/explode.

That's a real beauty...a find like that would make my fall for sure! Good job for "Uncle Bill"!

That's pretty sweet for him to come up with a find he can appreciate like that! My dad had a working model of one of those style flintlock pistols for a while and it's pretty cool knowing the history that could be behind it.

good story, a little like the 'this is my last cast....' story

Sure glad he didn't go back empty handed...

wish I had an Uncle Bill like that :headbang:
