Re: OUCH!! ...and birth of a legend!
BK will probably kill me for this, but I was there the day he dug that coin. He was off just a fraction of an inch in pinpointing. I believe the coin was next to some lilac bushes and was actually buried quite shallow for its age, so the signal was loud. No doubt, it was the last thing he expected to see when it was recovered!
In any case, after this accident, we gave him a hard time! In fact, a new term was invented that day that continues over 25 years later in our club. Any coin recovered with a gash from a digging tool or probe, is said to have a "Kennedy Mint Mark".
He's been a good sport about it, and I hope he'll forgive me spilling the beans. BK is a great detector operator, and this happens so infrequently with his recoveries (and as you can see, he recovers a LOT!) , that its a shame it happened with this particular beautiful coin! I've seen him recover delicate sterling jewelry items intact with filagree and silver components finer than sewing thread! Still, I've heard the term expressed now from other clubs throughout the Midwest, so the legend has spread in the telling of the tale!
By the way, BK, that's a great pic of that coin, extra mintmark and all!
