I will be moving to Oswego in a couple months (Lateral job transfer). I have done some net searching for local history and potential MDing sites (legal).

Does anyone have any good finds from there? I am very curious to find out what can be found up there.

Thanks

I detected there a few times. 4 really cool parks . The cops are cool good people . I HAVE FOUND SOME NICE BOTTONs , large cents , musket balls , silver coins IHpennys wheats, you name it.Stay away form the Fort that will put you in jail. Here is a good one thow ON the back side of the fort is a baseball field that leads to the fort so you can get close just dont get to close. if you find the feild look behind you at the old brick buildings there all red during the war thats ware the hurt stayed . That to has a little park not big but I have pulled a 2 center out of it . Now look tords the lake see the railroad track inbetween the trask and the lake are old swimming holes lots of silver there and old musket balls buttons and stuff like that . When I first started detecting I found a slave tag there didnt realy no what it was trew it . hope this helps. If you have a problem finding the spot . Try going east 10 street to the end it will be a parking area walk tords the lake you will see the trail start detecting . Right there on the trail is ware that slave tag was and not to deep neather . Anyways that there will keep you bizzy for a while. Get borde with that I got a few more spots not to far from that . You are a stones throw from a million awesome hunting sites... the history in that area is phenominal... central NY rocks! I wish I still lived there for the detecting... :tongue3:

You've got Ft Oswago but that's probably off limits. The mouth of the Oswego Canal that hits nearby (and connects to what was the Erie canal). I'd poke around on the west side of the canal & lakeshore (opposite the fort) and see what might be had. Also a fuel dock or to with grassy spots behind for boats that you might get permission to detect.

Hi,

Bring your snow shovel! I lived in Oswego before I started to MD but, I remember a couple of cellar holes you might be interested in (check with owners before digging). They are in an area with some trails that are open to the public. See Google map below showing the south side of the city on the west side of the river. Contact me if it's not clear.

Outstanding information guys. I will be getting up there the first week of June (prime hunting season from what I hear).

Snow? Yes......some 300 inches last year. I'm from Southeast AZ, born and raised. Never experienced more than a couple inches of white stuff. It will be a culture shock.

But.....I am looking forward to the older finds. I will definately check "near" the fort and wonder around the wooded areas for homestead remains.
