More specifically, it's a Sporting Button. That's a cool find, regardless of not being military. Certainly, it's pre-Civil War.

Nope its a Livery button, not sporting. Used on the uniforms of servants to big houses.

I was going to reply to that yesterday, but decided to give ole buckles a pass. :)

Outside of military I don't think there would be another more interesting type of button to collect.
