I found this today when detecting a site from the 1930s - it is a fairly heavy metal and has a hollow handle and ornate patterns. My wife suggested a cake slice but I think its a little too thick and heavy for something as genteel as serving cake. Any ideas?

I am thinking it might be a rug beater. I know when I was a kid, my grandmother use to take the throw rugs she had made, drape them over a a board that was nailed between two trees and flog the daylights out of them with something that looked very similar to your find .. and boy .. the dust and dirt would fly! That is a neat old find!

Is the hollow end threaded ? If so, I think it might be a finial that screws on to the top of a lamp.

Wow - three maybes and I agreed with every one of them as I read them ;D. The hollow end is indeed threaded. Its about 17-18 cm long.
