Posting for a friend, but can relay questions, although it may take time to answer. My friend found this in a street tearout. Late 1800s IHPs were found nearby.

Here is what little I know about it:

It is about 2 1/2" from end to end. The decoration does seem to be mostly on opposite sites, with the seam in between, not wrapped 360 degrees around.

I like the scabbard tip idea maybe even for a dagger?

I'm sort of leaning towards a letter opener scabbard tip.... maybe it's the wood comment.

I'm not sure, but I can ask.

Some scabbards were leather covered wood though anyway, weren't they?
