Bob, what you have appears to be a chest/trunk 'foot,' which was used to protect the bottom of the chest, as well as used for decoration. They were generally dome shaped to raise the piece slightly off the floor. Neat find, Breezie

Cast brass and Colonial American era. :icon_thumright:

Looks like it had iron attachments through the holes (as evidenced by the oxide rust staining). Appears to be either furniture or leather ornamentation.

Yeehaa, I found a cut pistareen close by, hopefully there was a trunk full of em. ;D

the only question I would have, do you think this would be on the bottom of a trunk? The small nipple in the design I would think would carve up a floor, The ones BigC posted seemed to have a smoother rounded shape to them.

Well it's a Furniture fitting of some kind, but I doubt very much it went on the bottom of anything :icon_scratch: why would it be Ornate, proberbly a cover for some type of fitting.

I just found one almost identical in Ipswich, Mass.
I'm going with bed bolt cover. I don't think something this ornate would be hidden from view.
