Heavy brass piece found at mid 1850 site. Any ideas what this is from? Thx
 

to me, it looks like the base of a desktop stationary paper spike

That might be it. I searched the web for a match with no luck, general group pic attached. The peak of the piece appears to have some remnants or iron in it as a magnet is attracted to the tip. Adding a sharpened iron rod could easily be done to make this a working relic.
