I don't usually roll in this section of the forum but I found this to be interesting. These lame ducks are freaking out about a couple of non ankle breaking holes out in the desert along the old Oregon trail. They have even gone so far as to call it looting.... What a disgrace upon themselves. I am so discouraged by all of this because these idiots think this is some big deal. This is a group of guys or gals that came through and cleaned up some trash from the 17-1800's with their metal detectors and probably found some cool trinkets along the way too. WTF is wrong with these environmentalists? You can see in the picture that these little holes were not more than a couple inches deep and I wouldn't even consider filling in a test pan hole that was only that deep.

Chime in with your thoughts on the matter.

Restoration of Oregon Trail begins where looting occurred | KTVB.COM Boise

Edit: I just thought I would fill in any concerns/questions you may have. Yes I know what the federal law states. It allows them to build roads along it but stops you from metal detecting on it. I dont agree with the law but I also understand it purpose.

What about all those craters on the moon? Was it looted?

Pretty soon the Feds are going to rush in and shut down this site - from the sounds of that article. WTH? Were the archaeologists really going to dig those old discarded nails? What archaeological value would discarded nails give? "Oh, the Oregon Trail was here, as evidenced by these nails. Oh wait, we already knew that." :censored:

It's quite sad, but the Feds are using "National Parks and Recreational Areas, Historical Trails, Historical Landmark Monuments, Endangered Species Protection Acts, mining turbulence and fish-killing arguments, Archeological Sensitive Areas", and a dozen or more other Green Agenda ploys to slowly, but surely run us out of and off of public lands. Somebody is gonna have to pay for what they are doing to the American Public and our lands..........

And if anything we're doing restoration work for free.

If there is ANY justice in the world payment will be extracted from these IDIOTS when the people start the second American Revolution. It's coming people! Folks are about fed up with all this Bovine Scientology out of the state capitols and Washington D.C. Finest political system money can buy!

Makes me wonder how many of them maroons have turned in a gopher hole
as "looting". Better yet, considering that area is loaded with badger, maybe
one will dig a nice big homey-hole right in the middle of the "trail...love to see
them boys scatter when he pops out with a typical badger attitude to protect
HIS TURF. :occasion14:

Reality check here. ALWAYS fill your holes. I do not care where you are or how remote you think you are. I do not care that kids leave holes in beaches or that the hole is in a mining area riddled with old timer mining shafts. Every detectorist that leaves open holes is giving ammo to people determined to shut us down. I am not saying I am perfect but I make a serious attempt to be an invisible detectorist both while I am detecting and by the evidence I leave behind.

All coil manufacturers should do what Minelab does and put that reminder on the coil.

I understand all the feelings about over regulation and such but things are the way they are. My dismay is directed more at the detectorists that by their actions cause my activities to be put under a spotlight. One sure way not to be my hunting buddy is to not fill your holes.

The thing is that the actual trail is extremely difficult to distinguish from all the years of reversion. Plus SO many different paths were taken that entire valleys could be considered the trail. These tree huggers need to grow their own trees in their backyard and then they can stay out of mine.

takes six or more years of advanced education to create an archeologist....
