There's been a lot of effort out here to increase the Killer Whale numbers, and I believe there were some new babies this year that seemed to be doing well.

New orca birth makes a big splash from San Juan Islands to Bothell

There was some concern that the mother and calf have separated from their pod, but all reports are that the calf looks healthy.

As to the question of why they might attack a boat; they are very intelligent creatures, and they see us gill netting the crap out of their primary food source, King Salmon. Killer Whales get cranky when they can't find dinner.

Killer wales on average kill 551 pounds of fish a day x by estimated population of 50000 that is 27550.000 pounds of fish a day. over one year is 10055750000 pounds of fish a year. divide that by a ton 2000 pounds = 5027875 Tons.

And, fish play an outsized nutritional role for many people; 3.1 billion people rely on fish for 20% of their daily protein intake, with some coastal communities reliant on fish for upwards of 70%. that consume

31000000000 x 2 ounces per day: 32000 ounces per ton 31000000000 divided by 32000 = 968750 tons a day x by year 365 days = 353593750 tons per year.

Human consume globally 353 Million tons per year. Killer Whales 502 thousand tons per year. Under 1 percent.

They say 27% of fish caught from fishing is wasted. that 95 million tons waste per year from poor fishing practices. Fishing is not infinite resource that is why best practices are need to reduce wastage and killing of non target fish a food source for killer whales as well as other marine animals.
