Im in va I was thinking rust but wasnt sure I pan in the creek an get lots of black sand but still havent found any gold yet was wondering if this was a gud sign that im on the right track thanks for your response btw

Is it solid (ie: rock) or is it more a matrix of clay, etc?

If there's red clay in the area, could be that it's a deposit of
it along the bottom there.

Nice to know I'm not the only dizzy one on the forums!

That's iron bacteria. Happens in spots that are very rich in iron. Google it and you'll see a bunch of pics similar. Pretty common. It can be natural just from the iron in the creek or could be some old rusty junk buried there.

Could be either rust staining or algae stains. Not
knowing what area you're in makes it hard to say.

AMD aka acid mine drainage. I'm originally from PA and
have found that occurring naturally in many areas.

Well YoungD, it does seem there's more than one possible explanation. :dontknow:

Looks like it could be one if it's actually on the rock. To me it looks like some kind of a fungus growing on the tree limb in front.

I just went to a local creek detecting and found what looks to be the same stuff. It stuck to everything. I looked at it closely as I was forced to since i fell in the stuff and saw it was a mixture of red clay and iron. Came home washed off one pair of boots and one shovel, my daughter went with me, didn't wash her boots or shovel and now the stuff is like concrete. It also gave off some false signals so I know it was heavily mineralized.

Get your facts first, then distort them as you please-Mark Twain

There's three lines on the rock itself the big one an two smaller off to the side an the fungus on the tree lol ill have to get better pics

Oh ok yeah I see those now. They do look like they could be quartz. Would have to see a closer pic to be sure though.

I may be asking a stupid question, but, have you sample panned it... I live in the Dahlonega Gold Belt in the north Georgia Mountains and when I see a streak like that I work the dickens out of it... being in the gold belt many times there is fine to course color,"gold" in just that type of material...

No haven't had a chance to get very close to it or the creek its been raining here for the last couple days.once it stops I should beable to get closer an get better pics an a few sample pans
