Hey all,
I bought these letters from a manuscript house that had some items that belonged to J Wilson McKenney and thought I would just post them and see what kind of response they would get... I'm curious if you feel the same way I did...

This post caught my eye because I *am* a writer... and reading these letters, I find my opinion is in regards to the style, not so much the content. I wish that we communicated in such elegant and polite prose now-a-days. Emails and forums leave little time for such prose, but it really does sound pretty to read aloud. :)

Sorry if this isn't the response you were looking for, but I did enjoy the letters. Nice find!

I think it was "wishful thinking" on McKenny's part. He wants the legend to be real and was hoping that the lawyer actually found something. Who knows if the "legend" is true? That's why they're called legends. Here is a little story I found in the New Tork Times June 21,1896 titled-MYTHICAL GOLD MINES; TREASURES FOR WHICH THERE HAVE BEEN MANY SEEKERS. Pegleg Smith's story is the third one of the three. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archiv...81338E233A25752C2A9609C94679ED7CF&oref=slogin This article says he came out of the desert in 1871, which was 5 years after his death. What do you make of that? A simple "misprint"? Nonetheless, even after just a couple decades of his death and "story" there were already scores of people who searched for his lost mine. Just as they still do to this day to a certain extent.

Hey All,
I really don't have too much info on these letters other than they were for sale through a auction sale from a online book store. I don't remember their name and it KILLS me, because I would love to buy more. Ant- I didn't find anyone saying that they " found " the nuggets. He just wanted to talk to Mckenney about them. Diggum- GREAT article, I have been researching the pegleg story for years and have not come across a story like this... I normally discount east coast newspapers because they are usually rewrites from someone out west. According to Henry Wilson the " real " pegleg was a guide out of Yuma by the name of John O Smith ( which came later the the 1st Smith ). The pegleg you are referring to is Thomas L Smith ( he's the most famous of the peglegs ). He NEVER found gold. He was with Dutch George ( George Yount ) out on what is now lake Mead and it was George that found the gold. George didn't know what it was and called it native copper. It wasn't until they got back to LA before they realized what they found. Thomas L Smith told the story that HE found the gold and simply made a killing on the story...kellycochick- I do agree that the way the old writers went about their craft was pure art.... I think they had the time to sit back and really figure out a way to express themselves, and that has been lost through the years... and it's our lost... have fun all

Thanks for taking the time to post the letters. "Stuff" like that are "real treasures."
