Open Holes Culprits, Cause of Banned Parks to Detecting

I have noticed holes not filled in, but it is rare we actually see a person not filling them. I have found that the squirrels will dig the hole back open looking for food. They must think that another squirrel had buried a bit of food in them. Any other critters known to redig holes? Another that comes to mind is the Michigan Badger. Any others local to your area?

Yes, animals have been known to run away with plugs that have been replaced :-\ I try to tamp my plugs down really tight so nothing can drag them away, but sometimes gophers, squirrels, chipmunks, dogs, etc...will dig them up because of the fresh smell of dirt :( I have heard of things such as hot pepper, pepper spray, and other animal repellents used to keep them away from holes. I have never been to a park where MDing has been banned because of this, and even if it is banned theres noone around the parks in my area to tell you to leave ;D

thats a good thing ! i have also heard that some animals can "re-dig" holes and leave the ground a mess. i cant imagine its a big problem though. unless of course, the critters are out to get us!.................how is that new cibola working out jake?

Only got to use the cibola for 3 days, now the ground is re-frozen and theres alot of snow! What a coincidence, I get my detector and all of a sudden summer comes out for 3 days so I can test it :D It worked good, found many finds I missed before :)

Critters will redig a hole. It has to be the smell of fresh earth. Crows, geese and sea gulls will not dig a hole in the grass, but they will pick up anything shinny like a gold ring.

However, one guy I know got a stiff fine from not covering his holes at a local park that has been closed to MD'ing in the past. He was approached by the park worker and ask to be neater. When he continued, police were called and he was given a ticket to appear in court. Cost, around $759.00 including court costs and to re seed the area. He never should have cussed her out for trying to help him. This is true, I know the dude....

I only have had one groundskeeper to approach me. She was concerned because the area had just been re-seeded. I showed her how I cut the plug and replaced it and was actually aerating the ground plus covering some of the seed. She said.., Oh, I thought you guys dug a lot of open holes!" Unfortunately some of us do! I have seen numerous places where someone had dug out plugs and just left them. At a local lake beach someone had used a shovel to dig out huge holes and just left them. That really pisses me off when I see that. I have never caught anyone doing it but if I do they will have their choice to fill them in or to be reported. I feel that strongly about it! I have too much invested and enjoy my hobby so much that I won't let some yokel get away with ruining it for me! >:( Monty

Free I know of some parks where detecting has been banned because of open holes. I have also come across some school yards that look like they had been hit by mortars. Its important for everyone from newbie to oldtimer to remember to always fill those holes

Yep, the post thread here is about animals that redig those holes. Anyone can be as careful as possible and something might come behind you and open the hole back up. I had one private yard i got to hunt. The woman there seen it was the squirrels and i could not hunt it a second time. Lots of wheats and a few war nickles in there and never got to hunt the rest of it.
