My trusty Excalibur 800 quit working a few months ago. Checked the battery..a fairly new NiMH replacement. Full voltage, but no sound from the headphones. Put it on charge..no difference. Bit the bullet, took it apart.

Here's the interesting part..battery was 12+ volts, but as soon as I loaded it (turned it on) it produced only 5 volts. Turned off, it returned to 12 volts. Detector works fine when connected directly to the charger. Seems I cooked the battery with the stock NiCAD charger. Actually melted the 2 small wires to the battery.

Moral of the story..USE A NIMH CHARGER!
