Anybody have any idea what the bowl shaped stone is?

Congrats to your stepson!! The rounded out piece appears to be a core, but I'm not certain. The pottery is possibly trade, I find the exact same pottery in many of the fields that I hunt. If it is trade pottery, your hunting grounds have a long history if occupancy. I say that because I think your stepson's point is an archaic piece. Nice finds, especially for an hour!

If the bowl shaped stone is worked along the edges it might be a shaft scraper. If it isnt worked then it is a core.

What is a core? Sorry...I'm obviously not very knowledgeable on these artifacts.

It doesn't appear worked on the edges at all.

Core is what is left over after making a artifact. The stone would of been much larger. There is a thread if you scroll down on here for Cores. You can see many examples of them in all different colors.

Nice finds ...both of you.
I just wanted to add..about cores...
Sometimes depending on the size of the original supply stone an entire tool kit of scrapers, points, flake tools..ect.. could be made from one core. Then eventually it becomes too small to continue knocking useable pieces from and is either discarded..or sometimes an edge is put on it and used as a tool itself.
