Well I went out metal detecting today and found only clad. I was a bit disappointed. I thought, surely today I will find silver but nooo....

Until I had an idea

---> I am really hesitant about sharing this technique, I am absolutely borderline right now on whether or not I will post this. If you are reading it, I guess I decided to. Ug just please do me the favor of not sharing it with anyone else.

OK, so as I was driving home, I spotted a parking lot/junkyard full of old cars. I realized that change often falls between seats. All of the cars at this junkyard were 1960 or older. Nuff said.

The first car I looked in (digging my hand between the seats) I found a nice silver Rosie. Not gonna say if or what else I found..

I better get some friends out of this post damnit !

Having worked in a junkyard before I can tell you with some certainty that most of the cars should have been picked clean by the staff. Many years ago I netted around $100 face value in coins along with 2 video game systems, a couple of knives, and various jewelry. A buddy of mine even managed to score a paintball gun (you would be surprised how much junk is in the trunks of trashed cars). This was all over the course of a summer. If you can find a lot that doesn't use younger kids to do the spare part runs and inventory you may come across something. If you have a month or two to sift through the cars it will be worth your time but most of the real good stuff should be gone within the first week of the car arriving. It is a cool thing to spend some time doing if you get the chance though.

That's cool as long as your weren't trespassing! Keep it straight and good luck on future hunts! :icon_thumleft:

Not my cup of tea, but don't worry about posting it cuz you ain't the first to drink the tea!

Sounds like good hunting grounds for a couple of 8-tracks! ;D

Having worked in and managed auto salvage yards for half my life I can tell you there have been lots of cool things left behind in cars. I have found a diamond ladies Bulova watch worth around $1000, a loaded 45 auto pistol, several rings & other jewelry, a ton of coins (mostly under seats) among other things. This is over a period of many years though and I was usually the first to check the car once it landed there. But... like the others have said, almost everything worth anything at all has already been found by the guys who work there or by customers over the years if the yard is open to the public. The chances of walking into a yard these days and findng anything more than some pertrified french fries is pretty slim. It's awsome you found some silver in some older cars but don't quit your day job to go junkyard hunting.

My brother broke his tooth in half when he pulled a seatbelt out the seat of a 70's nova. We were kids but we were looking for change in the seat and he pulled on the seatbelt and it eventually slid out from between the seats and pow he had a tooth in the front just like the dude in the dumb and dumber movie. I watched that movie and all I could think of was my brother and that split tooth. He didn't have it repaired until he was in his late 20's so he regretted car searching for many years.
Looking for coin in the seats was my idea but he took to it a bit too heartily I didn't mean for him to break his tooth but I guess it's karma getting him back for smearing poopoo in my hair when we use to have to bathe together.
