One very Old & very THIN dime !!
A couple of nights ago, I went back to the location I found several Silver coins ( 1930's-1950's ) at last week.
I found another THer there with HIS newly aquired ACE 250 & because I have the same, we hit it off right away. He seemed to be disappointed in his finds for the entire day, especially after i told him what I had already found previously. I asked him if he had checked around where the old driveway was next to the house, as I had nailed about 5-6 Wheaties there in the past. He said he had, but I walked over and found another within 10 minutes ( turned out to be a 1946 ) He seemed stunned & could not figure out how I did it when he had gone over the same area just a couple of hours before.
***Let me take a time out here to say I told him about TreasureNet and invited him to join us..... I honestly hope he waits a while, because if he reads what's next, he ain't gonna be happy? ***
There are a BUNCH of very old & very large trees that have been bulldozed down on this site. I pointed out the one closest to the house & asked him if he happened to have scanned the bottom of the base of this particular tree. He looked confused, but claimed that yes, he had & had gotten no signals at all ( which is the results one WOULD expect, but hey ... ya gotta at least give it a try )
Well today, I go back and "re-scan" the bottom of this downed tree on a hunch that maybe he really had not done it after all. WOW !! Am I glad I did !! A weak bell tone & 7-8 inches later ( and remember that is 7-8 inches UP, not down ) I pulled a small piece of silver coinage. At first i thought it HAD to be trash, as it was too LIGHT and too THIN to be otherwise. Then my heart started racing because it occured to me that it just might be a silver 3 Cent piece as the size was about right. I was in THing Heaven just thinking about it !! When i finally got enough dirt off to determine exactly WHAT it was, I was flabbergasted ( and STILL AM !! )
This appears to be a 1837 Seated Liberty Dime ( 1st year of this type to be minted )
I say "appears to be" because the diameter is too small ( the rim appears to be worn away ) and the thickness is almost what seems to be paper thin !! ( Weight of this coin should be about 2 2/3 of a gram ... this one weighs in at .8 of a gram )?
I am at a loss as to how this coin got to be this size & thickness, but am thrilled to have found it regardless. It is a "Keeper" for sure.
