I'm a country boy, but horses around here don't wear them.
They would if they were pulling something...sleigh,wagon,buggy...the hame is used to tighten or loosen where the draft of the pull is set...

Not for a walking stick Stoney! ;)

Cough, coughfamily forum, cough ::)

Congratulations non-city slickers. It is a hames/harness/yoke piece. Believe it or not, I was expecting someone to say that it was a hearse ornament!

;D Gonna be a talkin country here folks, so listen up:

A pair of hames flank a horse collar and then the hames are connected to the shafts or single tree (by leather straps or chains) which in turn pulls the, carriage, wagon, plow or other farm implement. Reins and other harness are then laced through the hames depending on the configuration.

There are many terms that separate the city slickers from the country folk like a "Hank of Shank" (a piece of rope).

And if a city slickers asks a country folk for direction they may tell the city slicker that its just down the lane a piece.
(which could be 100 feet or 10 miles) then turn south at the big oak (didn't tell the city slicker that it's no longer there) ;D

Interesting trivia...does anyone know why your car dashboard is called a dash?

Its a carry-over from the carriage era where the carriage dashboard is the panel in front of the feet...that primarily protected the driver and passenger from horse crap and other mud and dirt that the horse may kick up, especially when trotting or galloping. Many of todays car part terminology comes from the carriage trade.

Other interesting trivia...Do any of you city folk know what that white stuff is in chicken poop?

Chicken poop ;D
