One of my early finds?

About the size of a 1/2 dollar I found this near an old church some time ago. The center is hinged at the top. Curious as to exactly what it might be? Front and back views. Thanks

2moshers, yours appears to say 'world war veteran' and then something at the bottom where it's broken

I believe what I have is much older (although I could be wrong). I can just barely make out a small design of sorts on the front. Has had me wondering what it may be for some time. Here is another pic of the front.
