Picked this up today at an estate sale for the princely sum of $27.00 plus tax. Came to around $29. When I first saw it I could tell it was a very well done, experienced work. Not to mention, it just screamed to me. When I got home I pulled it from it's frame to see the name better. Then looked him up on the web. I was very pleasantly suprised. His name is Hector Moncayo a listed Ecuadorian painter who died in the 80s. Looking for auction results I found similar works ranging from $90 to several thousand dollars. This looks to be a very nice piece of invesment art. I love it and intend to pass it on when I pass.

Art, my worst subject. The stuff I like ends up being worth 20 bucks or so. lol

Diggummup,
I just figured if I was ever going to hit it really big at garage/estate sales, that it was most likely to happen with some largely (to the general public) unknown artists' work. So I have spent the last several years studying the works of some of my favorite artists, namely the technical aspects of their work. I did this so I would be able to identify technicallly profficient artwork when I saw it. Another thing that helps is to buy and then research what you've bought. I've learned an enormous amount that way. I never pay a lot of money, in fact, the painting above is definitely at the high end of my spending spectrum for art. If you never buy something you wouldn't have on your own wall, then all you have to do is hit once and you've paid for all the "stinkers" you've bought in the past. Several months ago I found a guache on canvas by a Wilhelm Dietz at an estate sale and it ended up like that. It's sale funded all the art I have ever bought. I collect antique etchings, and when I find them I usually have to mat and reframe them. I use the glass from all the mistakes for that. Save a lot of money that way.
