Either one of two that would be my best guesses. Either a Colt .32 caliber Revolver or a Volcanic self contained in .31 caliber. The Volcanic self contained was the only bullet used in the CW that had the powder contained in the bullet itself. It prooved too underpowered and was seldom used. It had a cork and brass base that attached in the small hole at the base of the bullet. I am leaning towerd the Volcanic because of the very small hole in the base. Most Colt revolver bullets had a large hole at the base so they would expand to fit the rifling. If it is a Volcanic bullet , they are very rare and is an excellent find. Monty

Thank you for the info. I will try to research the Volcanic bullet some more.

I have seen that site and there are 3 or 4 more that usually have pictures. By comparing the bullet in question with pictures of same one can often figure it out or get really close. It was the very small hole in the base that put me onto the volcanic bullet, that and being only .31" in diameter. Had I not seen the base I would have just automaticaly thought Colt Revolver. When identifying bullets, measurements, and good pictures are everything. You did great on both! Monty

Not sure on this and no offense to anyone. I really don't think its a volcanic. I've seen bullets with the lugs (rifling) that were made on the bullet. I could be wrong but i think the bullet might be a bit post civil war. If I am wrong feel free to correct me and give me heck

Hey Yank, thanks for the reply. I have mentioned this in previous posts but I guess I should add it to each post and that is; this is not a Civil War site. There was no CW action near here. That being said several CW relics have been found here. At least 3 C.D.Leet bullets and 1 Burnside have been dug as well as Union and Confederate buttons. I assume these were from private collections or just mementos of the war.
Also, I know very little about bullets and get most of my knowledge from Y'all. I am grateful for that. So, thanks to everyone for all the help and I hope to post some more "Whatsits" in the future.
