A few of you have asked to see close-up pics of all the coins. I have 16 of the 25 in my possession. The others were found by 3 of my hunting buddies when I invited them to join in the fun. One of the other 9 coins is a huge half crown, and is bigger than the clipped one I have. I'm posting a pic of that one here too that belongs to my friend Chuck. I won't be posting about these again unless I get back out to that site and find more. And hopefully that will be the case. Thanks for all the great comments and observations ..... Bill

And these aren't banner finds because...............? I mean, if this was England I would understand but this is the US and the liklihood these would be found are pretty slim, at best.

Bill...not to nag, but was it luck or research that led you to this haul? Just amazes me.

so, for this old west Tx guy............

why are they hammered????

Here's a quick explanation:

Hammered coins were struck from a blank piece of silver or gold with a hammer, by hand, between two dies. The die contained an inverse version of the desired image for the coin and was often made out of iron. The blank, otherwise known as a planchet or a flan, was placed onto the lower die with the top die being hammered down onto the bottom one, leaving the impression of both sides on the previously blank piece of metal. They were quite thin, and imperfections (off-center strike, etc) were not that uncommon. Hope this helps.

Just awesome!!!

I was stationed at Ft. Lee, near Petersburg, in the mid-1980's. Dug my share of Civil War artifacts/coins....and even a few older
large pennies. BUT......I mean......BUT.......never crossed my mind that there was anything like what you are showing.
Great, great finds......I am jealous as all get out.....but, I hope that you find a bunch more.....bunches more.....as long as you
promise to keep posting. Don't have the right adjectives to explain what I think when I see those coins. Earliest part of
European Americana, for sure.

Thats only half the story Using a gpx gold machine with small coil and settings that are mostly used to find small pieces of gold in heavy mineralized ground at a shallow depth. Would have been easier to use a larger coil . ??? ??? ???
