Shipwreck Workshop planned for students this summer

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has announced its third Shipwreck Archaeology Workshop to be held in Hatteras, June 18-24.

The Shipwreck Archaeology Workshop, SAW, is designed for 10 students from eighth grade and above. SAW provides a glimpse of what it is like to study a shipwreck and use skills learned in math, science, history, social science and writing in a real life, hands on situation.

This year students will also participate in a Remote Operating Vehicle project sponsored by the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, where they will replicate on a smaller scale a working R.O.V, or submarine. Lectures from Jeff Johnston of the Monitor Marine Sanctuary and Jim Bunch, diver and author of "Germany's U-85 A Shadow on the Sea" will cap off the workshop.

The program, created by Wendy M. Coble, archeologist, and the late Sheri D. Coates, MA. is being sponsored by The Charles Finch Gaddy Foundation. Coble will direct this year's program with local educator Beverly Henson and the help of museum staff.

Housing, under the supervision of a house parent, will be provided, as will meals. Tuition for this weeklong residential workshop is $200. Scholarships are available for those students who need assistance.

For an application or more information, please contact the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum at (252) 986-2995.
