One for the Button Folks - Octagonal and Handmarked

Got some time on my hands so I am cleaning some finds that were REALLY cruddy. This button does not fit with any others I have. It is not round. It seems to have decoration added after being made. It is silver plated/coated but seems to be only on the front.

So I need some help figuring this one out.

I haven't got an exact match in the book but will stick with the late 18th C because the (quote from book, not sure why when it pictures 8 sided buttons) 'Hexagonal shaped tombac's were popular in the 18th. Plus many other copper-alloy & chromed buttons (with incised decor) were evident in the 18th so not much of a leap to put the two together.

I agree. Just haven't seen others. I'd like to see others and get an idea of how they "group" together.

From what I know about this type of button I have to agree with Crusader.

Me too but nobody has one to post?? I'd just like to see others like it that we've found. I've found a LOT of buttons and this in the only one I've found of this shape. Just wondering how common they are.

Is it a picture of the shape you want, I have several tombacs this shape, plus a couple of others I think. Plus this shape is in the book, just not the metal type.

I have seen those. It seems that the shape is pretty common for cuff links and I wanted to know how common it was for buttons. From what I can tell, flat buttons of this shape are not that common. Just cool to know.

Tice has an example of one that he considers a button on Pg 254 Fig D-31 #7. Cast, one piece copper based button with wire shank. plain oxtagonal(his book is in error saying a eight sided button is hexagonal) specimen is flat, made in Bristol, England 22mm. He also lists another oxtagonal type as a 1750-1780 era one, but I would have to agree your specimen is late 1700s to very early 1800s.

My Brit book says Hexagonal on many pages for these types Maybe someone named them it & it stuck.
