On the board with some CW finds for 2013. Also neat cone shaped button I.D. help?

Went out again today in Winchester, VA. Got on the board for 2013 with some CW relics. Which was a few varieties of CW bullets, one being a fired 3 ringer, a fired gardner, a fired sharps, a dropped burnside and a dropped sharps. Also got a '51 wheatie(along with 60's clad) and got a nice quarter sized flat button with arrows and "gilt" written on the back, a cut pewter style button(thought it was a cut spanish silver at first!!! heart attack!) . Can anyone I.D. the brass/copper object with the design around it and the 2 holes on either end? Also got what I guess is a button. I believe I've seen them posted, but can't remember. It has a cone shape with the shank still intact. Thanks for helping and looking! HH! It was a beautiful day to detect hope all that could get out did!

Kuger, I found something similar at another property just made of a different metal, pewter perhaps.

Yep all at the lot on top of the hill next to I-81. I did find the dropped sharps and the larger flat button in the big corn field in the back at haldemans.

It's hard for me to date anything from this field unless I know 100% what it is. Anything from colonial, CW period to early 1900's coming out of here. The button certainly looks pre-civil war, but I'm no expert. Thanks for looking.

Matt, I dug one in late 2011 at an old home site. Like kuger said, BB researched them. Seems like it was a bridle ornament but he can tell you. They come from early late 1700s-1800s sites. Nice finds, Q.

Yea,BB will clarify,I want to say leather strap guides?Honestly it went back and forth and I got lost....I do know a conclusion was met though!I too have found them and as Quindy said,they do pre date the CW

I searched on google when I found my last one and it redirected me to treasure net and I believe I did see a discussion on it being a bridal type deal. Just wasn't really sure if this was the same thing. Thanks guys.

I have found a ton of those oval thingys. They were mounted in conjuction with a bracket device, here are some examples of the two pieces together, athough these examples were found separately. The most widely accepted opinion is that these were strap guides used on late 18th - early 19th century saddles or horse tack. However, I have yet to see one of these on a saddle or anythng else

The conical button with the long shank is approx 1790 - 1810. I have found a number of them on sites of that period and of varying sizes. The shank is so long it looks like a cotter pin!

That looks like the brass piece i found at Browns!

I was told my piece was part to a reigns guide, maybe yours is the bottom piece to it?

Yep your piece would have went with one of the oval pieces like Matt's. It makes sense that they were some kind of strap guide, but I am still waiting to see one actually mounted on whatever they were used on.

Thanks on the insight, Steve! Someone could tell me it's woman's jewelry and I wouldn't know the difference. lol They are a neat find nonetheless. And the little button was a first for me and is a very cool find. Glad to have a date range on them...definitely explains the amount of colonial coppers that came from this little flat piece of land on top of the hill. Kinda gives me hope for some colonial silver being hidden in there somewhere!
