Took the two kids and went on some trails that ATV riders use. There are quite a few trails to choose from but I had a topographical map and it showed that a section of this area used to be a road and on this road there was a house.....E I E I O. Sorry had to do it.....anyway, I went up one of the trails with the Ace 250 and my son went on another one with my old Bounty Hunter/Radio Shack. Well I was going up to where my daughter was just scoping out the area looking for where a house could have been when I got a good signal. I forget what it was but I think it might have been penny or dime range. More than likely penny. Long and the short of it is that after digging down about 4-6 inches I see a large round object. Looking at it closer I see that wonderful Liberty head and damn near pooped myself. Turned it over and saw the word "ONE" on it and near peed also, then saw "CENT" and the bowel problems subsided a little but I was damn happy aboutv it. I believe this is a large cent and you all can correct me if I am wrong. The year seems to be 1850 or 1853, hard to make out. That was my first large cent or whatever it is and my oldest coin!! Those ATV'ers might have helped me out by keeping the grass and vegetation down on this spot cause it was right on a path that they use. After washing it down with some water, I pocketed it and went a little further. Got another signal but it was bouncy but I dug it anyway and I found the wick/knob mechanism of a oil lantern I think. Will take pic and post another time.
When we were ready to leave my sion gets a signal with the BH and I go over and verify it with my Ace. Turns out to have been a button. What is written on the back is "BEST DOUBLE GILT". ANyone know anything about what that means or what company used that on there buttons.

Attached are the photos of the button and large cent.

Thanks

There are so many green spots of jealousy in front of my eyes I can hardly see to type!

I've been coveting the sacred large cent for 30 years now. I'm bound and determined to find one, though.

Great find funkman.

Nice large cent! I believe your button also dates from that time period as well. The term "gilt" or double or even triple gilt refers to a small amount of gold that is added to a gross (144) of buttons,I believe it was 5 grains of gold per gross for single gilt. These types of buttons were very popular in the early part of the 19th century.I don't know if "Best" was a company or just a term they used.Is there any type of design on it? Sounds like you've ventured into an old area worth more searching.
